Market capitalization, or market cap, is easy to calculate simply by multiplying the number of shares of the company owned by the share price (See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/m\/marketcapitalization.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Investopedia)<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The calculation used to determine market cap is:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>number of shares<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> X <\/span><b>share price<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> = <\/span><b>market capitalization<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For example, for a company that has sold two million <a href=\"https:\/\/msadvisory.com\/what-is-common-stock\/\">common shares<\/a> and the current share price is $20, the calculation of 2,000,000 X $20 shows that this company has a market capitalization of $40 million.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>A company\u2019s market cap is used as a measure of its size<\/strong> and, therefore, how much capital it controls compared to other companies, which can be thus ranked. At the same time, this is only a rough measure of a company\u2019s capital since it doesn\u2019t take into account the debt or leverage that a company may use to raise capital.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Market capitalization can also refer to the size of individual stock exchanges. An exchange\u2019s market cap is the sum of the market caps of all the companies traded on that exchange and represents a measure of its size compared with other exchanges.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The entire world\u2019s market cap is the sum of all the market caps of all publicly traded companies (See <a href=\"https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/CM.MKT.LCAP.CD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Bank<\/a>). Mid-cap<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mid-cap companies have a market capitalization of less than $10 billion and generally more than $1 billion or $2 billion. These companies generally work in growing industries and are relatively safe investments, though it may be hard to predict their level of growth. They include some recognizable names like <strong>Levi Strauss &amp; Co<\/strong>. ($7.60 billion) and<strong> Dropbox, Inc<\/strong>. ($7.37 billion).<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">3. Small-cap<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some experts put the cut-off between small and mid-cap companies at $1 billion and others at $2 billion. These companies are typically young and growing, so they\u2019re considered more volatile and riskier investments. However, they can sometimes provide much greater returns than large and mid-cap companies. Examples include Sunnova Energy International Inc.
